Upward Bound
Located in the scenic mountains of Western Maryland, Frostburg State University's Upward Bound Program is one of almost 800 national, federally funded, pre-college programs designed to provide students with the skills and motivation necessary to succeed in high school and afterwards in college.
Upward Bound, the oldest of the Federal TRIO Programs, has been a part of the FSU community since 1981. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.
Upward Bound is a unique program that operates year-round on the campus of Frostburg State University. Upward Bound has two components: Academic Year Program and Summer Residential Program.
The Academic Year Program provides students many opportunities to improve academically and meet their goals. Enrichment classes, tutoring, and academic and career advising are held on 12 selected Saturdays, and on an as-needed basis throughout the Academic Year.
The Summer Residential Program offers both a 3-week (new students) or 5-week (returning students) program held on the campus of Frostburg State University. Students get a firsthand experience of what it is like living in a residence hall and taking classes on a college campus. Upward Bound also hosts a Senior Week for rising 12th graders that highlights the college planning and financial aid processes.
Graduating seniors have the opportunity to earn college credit prior to their freshman year in college by attending Upward Bound's Bridge Program during the summer.
FSU's Upward Bound Program is funded by the United States Department of Education to serve 89 students who attend high school in Allegany County, Maryland. Students are accepted on a year-round basis and may apply upon completion of the eighth grade. Students may remain with the program through the summer after high school graduation.
"The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education." -U.S. Department of Education
Also on the Frostburg State University campus are TRIO's Upward Bound Math/Science (UBMS) and Student Support Services (SSS). UBMS is similar to the Upward Bound program except the focus is for students interested in pursuing careers in math and science areas. Student Support Services helps qualified students once they begin as college students.
